Award is recognition for service, leadership, and scholarship

José Castellón Gutiérrez, a Catholic University History major with minors in Islamic World Studies, French, and Latin American and Latino Studies and a member of the Class of 2020, received the Father Stratemeier Award at this year’s Cardinal Leadership Celebration on 29 April 2020.

The award honors the legacy of Fr. Boniface Stratemeier O.P., who was Catholic University’s chaplain from 1935 to 1947, and who was known for his sincere concern for students in all facets of their lives.  The award was first named for him in 1948, and celebrates excellence in extracurricular activities, leadership, and servce, as well as scholarship. This award is the second highest honor presented to a senior male student at the university.  Its criteria stipulate that “Distinguished leadership, responsibility and the nominee’s service to the university and fellow students should set him apart from other active individuals.”

José came to the United States from El Salvador when he was nine years old.  While growing up, he found his interest in history growing through watching the History Channel and taking AP history courses.  At Catholic University his focus turned to how history lends understanding of groups who are marginalized in contemporary American society, and how music and film reflect historical events and identities.  His undergraduate study has been complemented by internships and volunteer work with Learning Life, a nonprofit, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. After graduation José will begin a master’s program at Georgetown, with the eventual goal of a Ph.D. in History.

“As his advisor and professor, I can say confidently that José is most deserving of this award,” says Julia Young, Associate Professor of History. “He has worked incredibly hard during his time at Catholic University, completing his degree in only three years while holding down internships as well as an off-campus job. He has also spoken out publicly and powerfully about the challenges facing immigrant and undocumented youth. His perseverance and focus are truly admirable, and I know he will accomplish great things in the future.”
