Catholic University awards a limited number of fellowships (which cover tuition and provide stipendiary support) and scholarships (which remits half or all tuition) to qualified entering graduate students intending full-time study. These awards are highly competitive, and are awarded by nomination of the department.
The Department of History also offers a number of teaching assistantships (also awarded on a highly competitive basis), most of them to assist faculty by leading discussion sections of our gateway (200-level) undergraduate courses. All these assistantships come with cash stipends. Catholic University is an equal opportunity educational institution.
All continuing students who wish to serve as a teaching assistant should submit an application to the departmental admissions committee by Jan. 25 each year. The application consists of: a short statement explaining the student’s teaching interests and experiences, a list of all previous teaching experience, at Catholic University and elsewhere, and, where available, a copy of teaching evaluations. In distributing positions, the committee will consider the following factors: the clarity and cogency of the applicant’s statement, the desirability of providing teaching opportunities to as many students as possible, the quality of previous teaching, and the needs of the department (including having TAs teach classes in their fields and under the supervision of their faculty). Positions awarded will be announced during the spring semester.
There is no separate application for merit-based financial aid (fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships): all eligible applicants whose files are complete by Feb. 1 will automatically be considered.
